Next year, the Supreme Court will celebrate the 110th anniversary of its establishment. The National Bank of Poland (NBP) has announced its intention to issue a collector coin in 2027 to commemorate this important landmark for Polish statehood. The coin will also honour the first judges and the outstanding first President of the Supreme Court, Stanisław Pomian-Srzednicki, who formed the Supreme Court in 1917. The initiative was put forward to the NBP by the First President of the Supreme Court, Zbigniew Kapiński, and was also supported by the Stanisław Pomian-Srzednicki Foundation.

The coin will be made of silver, with a face value of 10 zlotys, and a limited edition of 5,000 pieces.

The Supreme Court was established even before Poland regained its independence, on 1 September 1917. On that day, more than a year before 11 November 1918, the first meeting of judges was held at the Krasiński Palace in Warsaw (known as the Palace of the Republic), and the Supreme Court commenced its operations, becoming one of the most important foundations for the reconstruction of Polish statehood. Outstanding lawyers played a key role in organising the Court from scratch: Jan Jakub Litauer, Antoni Żydok and Stanisław Pomian-Srzednicki, who assumed the position of First President of the Supreme Court. The first session of the Civil Chamber took place on 14 December 1917, and the first public session of the Criminal Chamber on 22 February 1918. The official language was Polish. One of the Supreme Court’s goals was the judicial unification of the Polish territories.

Since its establishment, the Supreme Court has been playing an important role in the Polish justice system: it supervises the jurisprudence of the ordinary and military courts and ensures the uniform application of the law throughout the country.
