In connection with the public statements made by the Minister of Justice on 4 August 2026 on the TVP Info in the programme 'Pytanie dnia' ['Question of the Day'], I express my outrage and concern regarding the Minister's systematic and persistent efforts to create a narrative that has a clear political dimension, but above all undermines the stability and constitutional order in Poland.

Once again, the Minister of Justice, leveraging his media presence, is voicing accusations against legally appointed judges of the Supreme Court and painting a false picture of reality. These actions have nothing in common with a substantive discussion on the administration of justice, but constitute a deliberate attempt to undermine citizens' trust in public institutions and judges, as well as in the judgements issued on behalf of the Republic of Poland. They only cause harm and increase existing polarisation. They have nothing to do with acting in the public interest that should be expected of the Minister of Justice.

The use by the Minister of Justice of a number of journalistic terms in relation to Supreme Court judges, and the suggestion that the First President of the Supreme Court is merely its acting president and does not represent the institution, constitutes a flagrant violation of the Polish constitutional order, as well as an attempt to create legal chaos. It is worth noting that the Minister raised no objections or protests when the same First President of the Supreme Court convened a meeting of the new National Council of the Judiciary.

The repeated pattern of intimidating the Supreme Court judges in media statements by threatening them with alleged recourse claims for their judgments raises particular objections. Such claims lack any legal basis and are merely a risky political strategy. The Minister of Justice's public declaration that he already has prepared lawsuits against judges and intends to file them soon with the courts also constitutes an unacceptable form of pressure being exerted by the executive power on the judiciary. Such behaviour not only undermines the independence of judges and may destabilise their work, but above all harms citizens who are awaiting fair judgements.

The Supreme Court cannot remain indifferent to the fact that the constitutional Minister responsible for the justice system, instead of safeguarding the law, makes attacks on the Supreme Court a regular part of his political rhetoric. I appeal to the Minister to cease making unfounded accusations in the media and to return to the standards of public debate.
